A water trap is a U shaped pipe where some liquid remains in its lower portion. The purpose of this liquid is to prevent gasses from going trough while allowing liquids to pass. Sinks and lavatories have the water trap to prevent poisonous sewer gasses from entering the house (as explained by an earlier contributor)
