Will a stock STI intercooler fit on a 97 Legacy? I don't want the turbo on it yet and I just wanted to make my scoop actually functional. What will I have to do to be able to do this?

If you're going to bother to turbo your car, the easiest installation would be a front mount. A top mount is used to reduce lag by shortening the charge pipes, but suffers from heat soak really bad in stop and go traffic. A front mount will introduce a bit of lag, but is more efficient, and generall give a lower intake charge temp.

An intercooler is used to cool the post turbo intake charge thus compressing the air further and allowing more oxygen per a given volume of air. In short, as the air is compressed it heats up, and also picks up some heat from the hotside of the turbo, passing it though the intercooler drops the intake charge temp, effectively raising the boost and fending off detonation as well.

As you don't even have the turbo yet, there's no need to even have an intercooler, you would see zero benefits from one, and would have a less responsive throttle as you are essentially adding an obstruction in your intake path, and lengthening the intake pipe by several feet.

An intercooler without a turbo is not fuctional.

Just open the intake and let it cool down your engine bay, that would be more functional than adding an intercooler.

Since the funtion of the intercooler is to cool down the charge from the turbo, I dont see why you would be intersted in adding the intercooler before the turbo installation. It would be non-functional until the turbo and ducting was installed.

Well when you pop the hood you should see the little metal plate that makes the scoop non-functional. Just remove that and you'll be alright.
