i have recently been dignosed with depression and they told me that a lot of it is probably because of stress from school and friends and me caring what others think about what i wear or look like. my dad is at home because of an injury so he would be there. the one i'm thinking of has where you can talk to teachers over email and other kids through AIM and message boards. Should i go through with it or just continue with regular school ?

So you want to deal with your social problems by locking yourself in your house and dealing with people throught AIM?? Part of being a human is dealing with people directly.

If you are depressed the worst possible thing to do is stop going out and seeing people. While your Dad will be home, he is injured and even if he were in perfect health, he cannot be a complete, well-rounded circle of friends that you need. What you need to do is become involved in activities that you really enjoy (activities outside of school are fine). Please, do not hole yourself up in your house!

People almost universally go through periods of worrying a lot about what others think of them. The way we learn to deal with this is to be out there in the world dealing with it. If you avoid it by staying home and simply refusing to deal with it, it will get worse, not better.

It is very important, no matter how old you are, to maintain social contacts, especially when dealing with depression. The more you avoid dealing with the social issues of worrying about what others thing, the worse those worries will get and the more depressed you will get.

The most successful home schoolers also participate in group activities with Co-ops, sports activities, group field trips and things like that. Taking classes on the Internet count as home schooling-- you still need to go out and see other people in the flesh, not just over the Internet.

Who diagnosed your depression? If it was a professional, I'm certain they will agree with me- talk to them about it. They will probably have some ways to help you ease into difficult social situations so that they aren't overwhelming. Show them this post.

You should continue with regular school. Kids have been dealing with stress and peer pressure of one form or another long before you were born and long before the internet even existed. The only way you are going to learn to handle these kinds of social problems is to continue going to school and face up to them. Social problems of this nature continue right on into adulthood, except it's called "keeping up with the Jones" and it involves far more expensive items like cars and houses.
Be yourself and don't worry about what anyone else thinks about what you wear or look like.
