I know that Freud began to notice it and denied its existence, rationalizinng it away as fantasy. though I wonder who picked up on the fact that it *did* exist and began spreading the word, etc.?

I know that Freud denied its existence. I would like to find out who started to spread the word that it *did* exist as a social problem, rather than isolated cases. particularly in the middle and upper classes.

the controversial thing about Freud and psychotherapy (specially now a days) is that one can not depend on it specially for sexual abuse in childhood. Many people say that hypnosis involves a lot of "the power of suggestion" more than recovered memories. It's not so much that it's fantasy but the fact that your mind stores different stimuli in different areas of the brain, and when in psychotherapy where hypnosis is involved, it can be very dangerous, since instead of true memories being recovered, one can recover bits and pieces from different parts of the brain and therefore come up with false memories.
Childhood sexual abuse does happen but it takes a skilled psychiatrist/psychologist to help someone who has truly gone through it.

I would say it was someone that was abused as a child that finally spoke up and didn't let anyone call them a liar or blame them.
