All songs tell a story of some sort... some great.. some aweful and a ton inbetween. The songs that mean the most to people are the songs whose stories encompass something that the listener has gone through or can identify with (these songs stay with us forever.. the songs we LOVE right now because they are "catchy" rarely last in our minds) Myself, I love folk music. I love ballads about people's journies both physical and spiritual. Some of my favorite artists are Josh Ritter, John Gorka, David Wilcox.
If you have something specifically in mind I could probably answer your question better! Feel free to reply to me with any specific ideas.. perhaps I can help ya!

Alice's Restaurant. Great 60's song by Arlo Guthrie. It's about 20 minutes long. Took up one entire side of an album back in the day when we bought this stuff on records. Very funny but very long.

Johnny Horton had several songs that told about historical events...
North to Alaska - Alaskan Gold Rush
Battle of New Orleans
Of course, Johnny Horton recorded way back in the 1960's.

Listen to some great folk song hits.
An artist that tells stories is Joni Mitchell.
Almost every song she sings tells a story.
Also listen to the dixie chicks

The music of the band Coheed and Cambria all tells one huge epic sci-fi story. They have three albums out right now, and their fourth is due out sometime this fall. That'll be the end of the story, but after that they'll release a prequel album.

Whiter Shade of Pale from Procol Harem... Tells the Millers tale from Chaucer's Canterbury tales...
and even though I HATE to mention it, lest it creeps in and gets stuck in my head...
Suzanne Vega is a narrative song writer... Luka.
(Holds her head and runs screaming from the forum...)
God I hate that song! It burns.....Worse than Holy water!
The Police is a narrative band....
Damian Rice
Jeff Buckley
I honestly think most songs tell a story come to think of it?
But it is the personal preference of certain songs that tell a lot about the person choosing them...
You sneaky little minx you!

When my daughter was a little munchkin, she always wanted me to make up a story for her as we were driving somewhere. When my brain had no stories, I would always get her to settle for the song, "Puff the Magic Dragon." It's a 1970ish folk song.
