What is the motivation behind it? Is it a personal gain (such as a boost in self-esteem) she is after, or trying to get the man to reveal his love to her or to claim her?
In any case what is the man's best answer to such behaviour?

women (and yes men too) that are like that are seeking acceptance and usually have low self esteem. The best way to help someone like that is to show them you care about them but not while they are performing that behavior (when they are trying to make you jealous). you ignore them when they are doing it and reward them when they are not.

It's been observed that jealousy is less about the object of affection than it is about the person who feels it.
In other words, if someone is secure in a relationship with another person, chances are he or she is not going to be provoked into displaying jealousy.
Now, as to why anyone would try to make another person jealous, I'd guess that it would be the pay off in a boost to self-esteem ("Oh, wow, I must be really hot--look at how those two are acting over me!") that motivates it. I also believe that the person trying to manipulate another into displaying jealousy really doesn't feel confident that s/he can maintain the other's interest, and needs to reassure her/himself of attractiveness to the opposite sex by setting up such situations.
In a sense, it's really kind of immature, the behavior one might reasonably expect from teens, but rather inappropriate in an adult relationship.
Best response? I'd address the issue in private, and ask why the woman feels it necessary to behave in such a manner. Make sure that you both have plenty of time to spend exploring the matter--it might just surprise you both.

It's a mind game and some people do that just to give themselves a boost in self esteem at someone else's expense.
I agree that you should run far and fast from this harpy because this kind of behavior will evolve into worse behaviors as time goes on.

It usually means she is a self-absorbed person and other peoples feelings are second to hers. The best answer for you is to tell her that your not that into her and walk away. She will realize that she is disposable, and that ticked women off. After she thinks that she has lost you, watch the other shoe drop. She will be ther bugging you, phoning you etc. This is a game women play. People that play games can't be trusted.

Women think differently than men, so this observation can be shown as confusing. But most likely when a woman does things to get a man jealous, it means that they want the guy to realize they like her and go to her. I've never experienced this, being that I am somewhat younger than dating age, but I've heard this is the meaning.

Usually its a sign of insecurity. She wants you to become jealous so you chase after her. It means shes interested in you. IF youre not interested then dont pursue a relationship but if you are id say you have a good chance of making one.

she doesnt have mental health issues she's trying to make sure that your interested. Probably feels a bit neglected and wants a bit of tlc.
Just be affectionate to her and show her how you feel. if it pisses you off tell her. But be clever about the way you say it or she'll get defensive.
Figure out whats making her feel insecure and reassusure her.
