for one labor/delivery I had two children, my husband, my mother, one of my best friend's and her pregnant daughter, one of my aunts, my sister and three of her daughters so... I had a full room of 11 people... twelve if you count the wandering one (my dad) he was not too comfortable but wanted to show support.... there was also two nurses (everytime they wanted to hide or have a break they would wander in..... lol) and the dr showed up just as the baby's head crowned.. so..... you can pretty much push the limit if you are comfortable, and want lots of people....
please note:
that was my fourth labor/delivery
I was more comfortable with the process
knew I would be bored and worry if I was not occupied
had been to that hospital two other times so the staff knew me from years before
my mother is a nurse, my sister has home delieveries and enough experience to be a midwife (we called her one there)
all the people I had in the room were respectful of other woemn on the ward, and even ran errands for the ones alone... I lost one aunt to another woman who never had anyway show and we kind of adopted her took turns comforting... my mom's older sister stayed there to help her
we are not the norm really, I know... lol...
but it is a funny picture... all those people crammed.. hehe... :)
I hope this has been of help
thank you for taking the time to read/listen
good luck

It was just my husband, the doctor, and two nurses for me. I wanted my mom to be there, but she didn't make it in time (I went really fast).
If I recall correctly, the form that we filled out had room for two names - so two was the maximum. It wasn't a large room, and with all the equipment, there wouldn't have been much room for anyone else. Besides, you don't really want an audience, do you? You might poop, you know. :)
I'm having another in one week (planned induction due to a disease, but we'll be fine once she's born), and I plan to have my husband and my mom there. I told my husband that he could ask his mom to be there if he wanted to (she only has boys, so she doesn't have a daughter to share the experience with, and her other son is done, and this is our last child, so this is it for her...) but he didn't. I'd have my sister there, but again, there isn't much space.
Choose people who will make you feel supported and safe. Choose people who you're very, very close with. You don't want anyone there that you wouldn't get naked in front of (because you'll be mostly naked). I won't be inviting my dad or my father in law, for example, for the actual birth (but they can be around for the labor, as long as everyone understands that I can clear the room if I start getting annoyed, and no one's feelings will get hurt).

With my daughter I could have had as many as I wanted, but it was only my sister and my husband. This time around, at a different hospital, policy will only allow 2 in at a time. They can "change out" people, but max of 2 only and no one under the age of 16 at all.

Personally I've never wanted anyone but my husband in the room when I give birth. You are really not going to want to socialize while in labor. I think it would put to much pressure on me to "entertain" the people who are in the room. And it is a very special time for my husband and I and we enjoy spending it with just us.

If everything goes ok thens it's usually up to you and the doctor, my doctor told me I could have as many as I wanted but if any complications came up he would probably kick them all out(except the dad). Just keep in mind that your naked from the waist down and unlike tv and movies it's not that clean or pretty if you don't want to hurt anyones feelings just tell them the doctor gave you a limit.

My whole family was in the room during my labor (my husband, mom, step-dad, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, friends) But when it came time for delivery I only wanted my husband in there with me. I felt it was a special moment that we should share together and I didn't want to worry about having anyone else in there during the birth. To me that's something private.

Where I live you can only have 2, but I ended up having to have a c-section so my husband was the only one in there besides the doctors.

My hospital will allow up to four people, but I am going to have two with strict instructions - kindly given - there will be no talking other than coaching during the pushing stage. (I don't plan on having any meds.)
