What is better?

Renting/Buying an existing business and make it into a salon or making your business home-based with a section of your house renovated into a salon setting with all the supplies and equpiment you need?

I feel that being home-based, will be better financially because this way, I won't have to worry about having a seperate or extra mortgage/rent to pay..but at the same time, does working from home make you and immediate target for robbery and unwanted attention, since your home will be open to the public?

What do you think?
Advice please.......

I think you should try renting an existing location first to build up your clients. After your business is up and running, I would try to buy the location. But my opinion is NOT to have a home based business. Even if it is your garage or you have a little studio built on your property. Most people do not want to go to someones house to get their hair done (even if it is nice). I mean if they wanted to go to someones house, they can go to Sha'Quita that do hair on 34th and Moncrief and she only charge $25 for a perm, updo, color, and a tape up.lol

** I dont really know anyone name Sha'Quita on 34th and Moncrief. I'm trying to make a point that most women do not want to go to a house to get their hair done.. Good Luck**

if you can buy an existing business is a good idea, do it for a year or so then sell it this way you can built your own known clientele and move it with you to your home base business.

or

get a rental place in a existing salon and built your clientele and the after some time move it to your home base business.

i think a home base would be better.just take 1 room and use it just for a salon.i mean, what could be better?you wont have to pay rent, and you would be right at home at closing time.

If this is truly your PASSION then go for it! One caution about your home, strangers (sometime) will be comeing in and out of your house...not too safe in post 9-11 era. Secondly, you want to come to your home and not be concerned about the job once you leave ( better said than done), however, let you home be a place of rest.
