Go to apartments.com and type in all of your criteria. Once you've got a list of choices, open a new browser window and go to apartmentratings.com. On apartmentrating.com type in the name of the apartments and location and it will pull up reviews of present and past tenants. It will give you a good idea of how the apartments really are- some of the reviews seem phony or are just silly, but most of them will be helpful.

Doing this show you apartments you may not have considered in the past- they make not look "nice" from the outside, but they may be in a good area and have good reviews. I picked the apartments I live in now because they had awesome reviews on apartmentratings.com and I have been very satisfied with them thus far. They are a little bit older, and I probably would not have considered them just driving past. But I am really glad I did.

Just something to consider.

What do you mean by nice? Yes Allentown has some bad neighborhoods. Even in Allentown you won't find much under $600 and if you really want neat, clean and safe expect to spend a $1,000 a month.

Have you tried Bethlehem and Easton? Do you have to live in Allentown? Do you own a car? There are several small towns surrounding Allentown. You might get a better deal renting a house instead of an apartment. There are investors (though very few right now) holding vacant second homes.

Ten years ago Allentown was at least a third cheaper than living in NJ, now so many people from the Garden State have moved in that the prices are about the same. The real estate market in the Allentown area is still strong. Actually most of Southeastern PA is enjoying price appreciation well above the national average.

You have several colleges in the area, talk to some of the older students they might know about available rentals. Then again they might not be that nice.
