I am betting it may be that during the booting process the output of the computer is being sent to the axillary video output.

Each computer uses different key combination to turn on/off the aux video output. Some use the function key in combination with the "F" keys some don't.

A common way is to use the fn + F(1-12) key. A fairly common key is the F3, F4, F5 key if you see a blank computer screen on the key that is the right key.

To check this you can plug a monitor in the aux video output and see it the computer screen comes on that monitor during boot up.

probably you will find in your computer documentation that the screen brightness has been turned down when your cat walked on the keys, the solution is relatively simple not entirely sure about exact buttons to press but i think it is the fn button and there should be a key with a brightness logo on it, press these both together to restore brightness,fn stands for function check your manual to clarify.

Get a new kitten?

Well, perhaps not. I am guessing that you can
probably boot off the distribution media and
repair the OS following its directions or
notes off the Internet.

However, ultimately, your OS is defective.

I recommend replacing it with one of:

http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

Seriously, there are too many circumstances
where, when Windows boots, a wrong keystroke
(or foot stroke) and the user is completely confused.

I'd go with Jerry on this; on mine, it's Fn+F5 to divert the video output - ideal for little paws to walk on!
