don't count calories, or carbohydrates, or protein (although thats actually quite good)...
just look at what you're eating and think..
is it fresh?
is this natural?
is it lean?
is it wholemeal? (if possible),
has it been processed in anyway?
and is it balanced and healthy?
if you follow the above, eat as much fresh fruit and vegetables as you can... enough lean meat, and make up the rest of your food intake with complex carbohydrates, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day... you'll be fine... the weight will drop off!
just chuck out all the crap from your cupboards, all the food, that isn't anything more than a chemical concoction etc...
you should never do a diet which excludes a food group! they're just inherently bad for you..

Hey Lynne,
it depends on your age, height and weight.
But the golden rule is to burn off more calories than you actually take in.
Good Luck.
