Some historians say that the Spartans fought au-naturale. Without even the support offered by leather bikini-briefs. Now that takes some balls. PUN DEFINITELY INTENDED.

In a time when togas and robes were the daily wear and underwear were not yet invented, fighting like that was probably very liberating. Keeping your package from swinging around makes it less of a target.

Although this movie is in no way a "historical" work, history does tell us that in ancient times, they fought nude. This is not found only in Greek history, but is prevalent there. Additionally, the soldiers formed bonds that were not unlike that of what we consider "lovers". They did this to create an almost unbreakable bond of loyalty. It is evdient in the way they fought and protected one-another.
