Sounds like what was going on with my son. He got his first teeth at 5 months, too, and in the months since then he seems to do something different every time he's cutting a new tooth. I know exactly what you mean about running to the doctor but hopefully your doctor hasn't made you feel like this (unfortunately I had a pediatrician who spoke to me like a was a kindergartner when HE felt my concern for my older child's health was unnecessary --I reported him). You know your baby best and if you're worried that something is wrong and want to see the doctor then you should --better to have peace of mind.
Best wishes!

RE:
Could my baby be shaking his head because of teething pain?
My 8 month old son keeps shaking his head back and forth (like he's saying no). I know some children do this because it's a new "trick" they learned but I don't believe that is the case here. He has had a few ear infections so that may be it - or maybe the ear pain is from the...

Teething can be very painful.
My son is also teething and he was doing the same about 3 weeks back. At that time there was no sign of upper teeth. When I use to look at him, he use to smile at me. He use to enjoy doing that. His teeth have popped out now with a lot of pain. Even today he was doing that.
I don't think there is anything to worry till the time he is not crying or making a monotonous kind of noise that they make as if saying hhhhhhhh.
If he is in pain, which i noticed starts in the noontime, then give him painkiller and that will do.
Giving him your washed finger to bite on will also help in breaking those gums.
Don't worry, your son is absolutely normal. See his expression when he shakes his head. He would be enjoying it. My son use to do that on his papa's back at night for attention.

The head shaking is self-soothing, it could be related to the teething pain. My baby has been head rolling once in a while since he is about 2 months (he is 7 1/2 months now), when I put him in his bed. I see it as if he was rocking himself to sleep.

Teething pain is loud and verbal. Maybe still an ear problem thing. Get him checked out. Don't want him to become deaf cause you were negligent. The antibiotics isn't something you just dole out like a different flavoured juice. Different antibiotics for different bugs.

Sounds to me like he is just learning something new and isn't really associated with anything. It is a very common age for babies to learn to shake their heads no.
The only way to be certain it is not an infection would be to take him to the doctor...nobody on here can tell you for sure if it is pain or an infection. We can only assume.

I agree with the teething, I did notice my daughter would do this while teething I think the pressure of biting down makes the gums feel better and the screaming and what not is frustration 10 month olds get frustrated like we do, I would definitely give her doctor a call to get their opinion..

It could be teething pain, ear infection, or it could be a serious neurological problem. You should take your child to the doctor.
