A fraction raised to an exponent has the same effect as raising both the numerator and denominator to that power. So

(6/7)^2 * (1/2)^3 = (6^2)/(7^2) * (1^3)/(2^3) = 36/49 * 1/8 = 36/392 = 9/98 by simplifying

{ (6/7)^2 } x { (1/2)^3 }
= (6/7)(6/7)(1/2)(1/2)(1/2)
= (6x6x1x1x1)/(7x7x2x2x2)
= 36/392
=9/98
