I am so confused. I have no idea how to work this problem correctly. I thought I was doing the process right but I keep coming up with the wrong answer. I would appreciate it so much if someone who is actually good at math could help me.
I think it has something to do with the quadratic formula, but I'm terrible at math and could be completley wrong.

Show how to find the solution set for the equation 4(3x – 2)^2 = 36 using algebraic methods.

5 answers

4(3x-2)^2 = 36
divide each side by 4
(3x-2)^2 = 9
take the square root of each side
3x-2 = 3
3x -2 +2 = 3 + 2
3x = 5
x = 5/3

Kenny is close, but when you take the sqrt of something, you end up with a +- number

4(3x - 2)^2 = 36

divide both sides by 4
(3x - 2)^2 = 9

take sqrt of both sides
3x - 2 = 3 or -3

add 2 to both sides
3x = 5 or -1

divide both sides by 3
x = 5/3 or -1/3

Brackets
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Substraction

I will show you step by step
Step One. Brackets. Since there is no like terms in the brackets you must go to step 2.

Step Two. Exponents
4(3x^2-4)=36

Step Three. Division. There is no division so go to step 4

Step Four. Multiplication. Since the number is beside the brackets you must distribute/ multiply everything in the bracket by 4 (the multiple).

12x^2-16=36

Step Five. There are no more like terms on one side so you must try to isolate x. You do this by addind 16 on both sides.

12x^2=36+16

12x^2=52

Step Six. Isolate x further by dividing both sides by 12.

x^2=52/12
x^2= 13/3

Step Seven. Isolate x even further by Sqaure rooting both sides.

x= \/13/3
x=2.08

4(3x – 2)^2 = 36

Multiply it all out to ultimately get

36x^2 - 48x + 16 = 36

subtract 36

36x^2 - 48x -20 = 0

Now factor out a 4 to make things easier

4(9x^2 - 12x -5) = 0

Factor again

4(3x +1)(3x-5) = 0

now set equal to 0 and solve

3x + 1 = 0
3x = -1
x = -1/3

3x - 5 = 0
3x = 5
x = 5/3

Ok so:

4-3x-xss-@ss=5piss

4-3x-@ss@ssx=5piss

so then:

4x-4x@ss@ss=5piss

8x@ss@ss=5piss

and then we combine them

8x+5=@ss piss @ss

there you have it
