I have had the same problem (though I'm straight).
I found it was easier to get jobs from a female employer, perhaps she liked the idea of having power over a man (I also hear some minorities prefer white butlers). I think perhaps you should be even more macho (but polite), not camp.
It's difficult for a man to dress professionally without being threatening. If you're in a suit, you might look like a boss. If you're not, you might look like a janitor. It's not just sex discrimination, it's cultural expectation. Perhaps a tie and slacks, but no jacket.
The main reason they discriminate against men for this is 1) we want too much money. Women are still underpaid, so that's why people want them for secretaries. When equal pay is a reality, you'll have less discrimination.
2) Second is they want a toy who'll work crazy hours. Married women often don't get jobs as secretaries either. Of course, I've seen male secretaries who have good positions (and many of them not only look like supermodels but actually have modeling experience).

I do agree with laws, I doubt the fact you are male is the hold up. Maybe your dress is less then professional?
Have a nice hair cut, not trendy .. shave and no piercings!!!!
I do know that appearance is a sure thing. I have personally turned people down with lack of appearance.
I don't care if you are gay, don't talk about it. Straight people don't go in explaining they prefer people of the opposite sex, gay people don't need to go in explaining their personal life either.
Put merit on your ability and keep it professional! I would also try a temp agency or places that advertise for you to send it resume .. Do you have past experience in an office? I know 28 years old isn't old, but should be old enough for some good past experience and references. List them and that can speak for itself.
If all else fails, go to the college and take a test on careers. I remember way back in HS there was a test that compared your ability and personality to a job area. Maybe you need to see if there is something out there that is more suited for you.

I'm not sure about the office job situation, but here is an exciting career opportunity that includes some office-type work if you're interested.
I have Spa parties in my home, others homes, businesses, anywhere you can think of. They are so much fun, you can choose any theme, such as:
Teen Spa, Office Retreat, Martini's/Margarita's & Make-overs, Happy Hour, Bridal Spa, Mens Spa, Grand Opening, Champagne Spa or anything you can imagine.
You create your own schedule, work as little or as much as you want. The company I work with is $250 to join, this month you can join for $99, and you receive over $700 in product and sales aids. If you are serious about building a business for yourself I can help you get started without paying a penny.
Email me for more information. No Scam. Legit Business Opportunity!
Good Luck!

Most employers are aware of discrimination laws in this country so I doubt your being male and gay is not the reason you haven't got a call back yet. I suggest you check your hygiene and appearance, Also adjust your attitude and pull out the confident being inside of you instead of the whiner.

Try going though a temp agency and have them look for you. I know its hard for a guy to get this type of position because it typically is considered a position for a woman. But though and agency they will be able to more easily get your foot though the door, per se. They can find you a perm or temp to perm position.
