I just noticed the red-ear slider is blind after taking a close look. I might go to a vet but, my dad doesn't want to as his friend told him that they won't survive. So, do you want me to go? Or just watch it die? Anything I should do?

Unless your dads friend is a "turtle expert" I don't believe that your turtle will die from blindness.Nothing dies from merely being blind, there has to be something else wrong. Some animals are born blind, so just wait and see what happens. Go to the library, or on line and research the type of turtle you have and see if they are born blind. You'll get more knowledge that way than from heresy.

A Blind turt will have a hard time but it will survive. How old are they? I know they can survive because I had one a long time ago. You have to be careful and let them smell the food by putting it in the water or above their noses, then you have to try to get the food in their mouths. Make sure they know where their basking spot is, so NEVER change it or they will have a hard time adjusting. Also, they need less water, and it would be better if you had half land half water so he could crawl onto land in a gentle slope. It may be hard to live with, but there are people out there who will take them off your hands. If you bring him to the vet(which you should, he's no different than a dog, and you bring them to a vet) they can give you more specific info or put them to sleep for you, which I highly suggest instead of just watching it die of starvation.

How can you tell that it is blind? I would take it to the vet if something looked suspicious. If I couldn't afford a vet or couldn't convince a parent to let me take it to one, I would try to find it a home where someone would take it to the vet, or perhaps give it to turtle/tortoise rescue group if possible.

RES can survive blind and I have even seen RES that didn't have eyes at all. It is difficult for them though. Please do some research about RES care etc., then you will have some information to present to your father. Try looking at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/ if that hasn't been mentioned already.

What was the purpose of taking it to the vet anyway?

If the turtles blind, it's blind. A vet isn't going to make it see. I wouldn't take it, it would be a waste of time and money.

3 obtainable motives i ought to think of of with my turtle. one, it must be blind, yet no longer too straightforward. 2, it could have a nostril that doesnt artwork, confusing its dirction slightly. 3, turtles are no longer the brightest. yet a element to bear in concepts, turtles choose extra effective than one experience to discover something, alongside with nutrition :)

get it a seeing eye turtle. you don't die from being blind unless there is something else wrong with it. and while you may be emotionally attached to it...remember, it's just a turtle.
