Overall it has to be Derek Jeter.

The question asks who "is" the best Yankees player, so that limits answers to the players who are currently on the roster. With all due respect to Babe Ruth, Lou Gherig, Yogi Berra, the rest of Murderer's Row, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, and Don Mattingly, none of them are still playing.
To be the best player, you have to be in the starting lineup, so that leaves 9 options... IF the DH is to be included, but the DH is a DH because of a good bat and inferior glove, so Jason Giambi is also eliminated by that reason.
In my view, the best Yankee has to have worn the uniform for at least a full season, which eliminates Bobby Abreu. Also, I can't consider a player "the best" if he's involved in a squabble with a teammate. So long, A-Rod and Jeter.
Who does that leave? First base? I can't recall who that is offhand. Robnison Cano? There are better bats in the outfield. Jorge Posada? Again, better bats in the outfield. Hideki Matsui? Although he's my favorite Yankee, he's not the best because last season was injury-plagued. Ask this question in '08, or even in November '07, and I might be able to change my answer to Godzilla.
That leaves Johnny Damon, who is a worthy answer when considering every factor I've brought to the discussion.

Jeter , Arod or Rivera. I would place Rivera as the most important(he essentially makes it an 8 inning game) and Jeter second( the best clutch hitter I have ever seen). New York is the only city where the previous seasons MVP can get booed , well maybe Philly. That will all go away if they win one with Arod having a good post season. It does not really help that Arod and Jeter do not get along so well now. Jeter is the most popular Yankee and the fans will not lay off Arod partly because of that. Jesus Damon Great , Matsui Great, Giambi solid, Cano bats 8th and hits 340 they are going to win again this year. They are truly loaded. TC messtograves

Of this group Derek Jeter. While A Rod does play for the Yankees he is not yet a real Yankee he needs to perform in the clutch and get the ring first."
"Stats don't mean a thing if you ain't got dat ring "
Hey Mike R:
I have an audio tape of Bob Costa's eulogy for Mickey Mantle - It's simply eloquent

Mickey Mantle...he was the face of the Yankees when he played and still gets brought up not to mention Babe Ruth...Jeter is good but not to the status of these to fine athletes.
By the way Mantle is the only baseball player that I know who's funeral was broadcasted on national TV.

All around, it has to be Jeter. He is of the same mold of the old time greats. I also think Posada adds a lot to the team, but is rarely recognized for his professionalism, ability, etc,

I dont like him, heck, I dont like any Yankees at all, but Alex Rodriguez is their best player. Even though he hits .066 in the playoffs.
