...the government permitted seniors to form cooperatives, and import low cost items, like food, clothing, etc. from China and other places, without applying all the prevailing rules & regulations, which make everything costly, and distribute such imported items among themselves? Of course, seniors may have to forego some of the existing legal protections, as it is the rules & regulations that provide these protections.

Will such a move be good to the seniors, especially the ones who live in poverty?

There should be no senior citizens living in poverty, regardless of how they came to be in that situation. There should be adequate financial aid to all seniors that makes them able to pay the costs for products. Establishing cooperatives and other such measures are useful, but complex. It is like the so-called prescription supplement plans that came out this year. For any plan to work, it needs to be simplified so that it can be understood. It needs to be implemented by a third party that has no stake in the outcome, as in not allowing input from drug companies. It should also not involve the need to choose between several complex and confusing plans.

Umm - not all seniors in need of assistance are their because of poor planning! My Grandmother worked her *** off her entire life after my deadbeat grandfather walked off leaving her with 5 children to raise. She worked until she was 67 years old, paid her taxes and her FICA and into her pension. She saved every nickel she could and never lived extravagantly.
The problem is that LIFE got more expensive than what her pension and social security meet! Insurance premiums, prescriptions, housing, heat, electric - it is all over the top expensive anymore.

There is NO excuse in our society where Elderly citizens should choose between lights and heat or medications and food. My grandmother is 92 years old and has lived a good upstanding life and now when she is old and no longer a "productive member" (read: tax paying!) in the eyes of the government she is abandoned. That is WRONG - what will be there when my generation gets there? I work, I save, I have 401K's and IRA's and all that garbage - but will it be enough?

Something has to change - stop blaming people for getting old for pete sake. This country treats criminals better than they do their elderly and it sickens me.

As a "senior" I thought I should throw in my two cents. It's not the people that planned for their future that need help it's the ones that didn't plan for it. Our government gives "handouts" to people from the day they are born till the day they die. If this keeps up your going to see major problems. There are families that have three and four generations on welfare. Where is that money going to come from when there are eight generations asking for money and only four generations able to pay taxes. You get the idea, I'll shut up and go away.

I applaud your thinking, but hazzard a guess that you will be unilaterally labelled as a socialist. It would appear that, on this forum, people who want to develop programs to help people are considered socialist or communist. America has become a breeding ground for intollerance....and would rather keep their own pennies in their own pockets...instead of helping those that cannot help themselves. Nice place to live...if you have money.

Oh, and by the way....I am a Capitalist. But I'm also a humanist...and I have no problem sharing what I have, if it means helping the country become stronger with better healthcare and a means for everyone to eat.

That is easier said then done, import laws are tied to many international treaties.

Seniors have had their whole life to prepare for retirement. The standard of living that they each has is their personal choice. Changing laws because they made choices that you think were the incorrect ones will only cause other problems, and denies people the freedom to live as they choose.

Well, I don't know if you are a seinor or if you are just talking, but Money is not the major problem of seniors.

Health care is........Prescription prices are......transportation is (if you don't drive), finding someone who will help clean and do laundry is....cooking is....

For those who do live in an impoverished situation, there are programs in place that can help. Those seniors need help wading through the bureauocracy......

Tell their kids and the church to take care of them. When they were young, they partied and lived like it was 1999...never saved. Not the government's responsibility.
