I really don't think that we should ever be content with ourselves. What we have...yes but not with who we are. There is always room for growth. Just always pursue truth. Question everything. Take some time and see what the Greats of the world have said about life. Einstein,Socrates, Plato, Buddha, Jesus, Gandhi, etc. forever. There are some great tools out there for thinking in different ways. Have fun...It's a beautiful journey!

Make a list of your blessing, either in a notebook or on a large piece of paper; heck, you could start on a wall if you are not against repainting it. List the big things you are thankful for (food, shelter) and the small things (friendly smalltalk with a stranger, finding a penny on the ground). Make a point of adding to it everyday.
Do something kind for others. You can leave anonymous gifts to others or work for a charity. Ask what you can do for friends and actually do it. I like volunteering at schools myself.
Unclutter your life. If you go through everything you have and think seriously, you may realize that you have a lot in your life you don't need. Donate those items to charity or just toss what isn't worth keeping. Before buying something, think if you really need it and want it, or if you can wait a week before getting it. If you forget about it after a week, it sounds like contentment to me.
Also, when I feel like getting something, I usually add it to my amazon wishlist. It is on the list so I or anyone I know can buy it, thus I don't feel like I need to get it NOW, I can get it when it suits me. Usually once a month I go through and delete some things I realize were just whims.

hi ash, I don't know if u r a girl or boy but it is very nice to see that u started to realise the facts of life. It depends what you mean by being content in life - is it only money or career or family that u r talking abt ? If so, it is not in its true sense. You can achieve full contentment just by being thankful and think everyday that there r millions of people even without a meal per day or one piece of nice clothes to wear. You will feel content every day.

This might not be the answer you're looking for but sometimes people have an unrealistic view of what they think they're lives should be like. They tend to undervalue the simple things in life until something takes them away eg illness or death.
Remember to stop and smell the roses and appreciate your life and the people in it as it's all to easy to forget all this stuff in a hectic rush to get your life, career, nice house and car.
Maybe do a little volunteer work, that quickly helps you realise how fortunate you are.

I highly agree with you, ash. Prunes, yogurt, or draft beer all have the friendly bacteria needed for a smooth bowel movement. If you cannot achieve this form of contentment, then you do have troubles!
*p.s. If you don't have a sense of humour either, you won't be content enough to laugh at life's little absurdities!

you should have really low expectations of everything and everyone. that way you'll never be disappointed.
to wit: expect your neighbour to try and kill you. then, (if and) when he doesn't, you'll feel good about it. - "ahhh, he didn't try to kill me today, what a good day i'm having!"
