presently i have 256 mb ram. out of which 32 mb is taken up by VGA. So i am left practically with 224mb only which is generally insufficient and makes the computer slow? any ways to get away with this problem? i have P-IV 1.7, winxp sp2.

Get at least 1GB (if you cant afford both) You will get a significant performance boost. Don't buy from crucial.com, there way overpriced.

Go to the mobo manufacturers site and download the manual!

Either go to the mobo website and read the manual or go to Crucial and install their tool, it should tell you how much you have in your system and how much you can install.
