Probably depended on their social status and exactly how far back we are talking.

If you were rich... A slave did it for you. If you were poor, they more than likely used their teeth?

Anyone who would walk around in the dirt barefoot... I'm sure has no problem also putting said foot into their mouth and nibbling a little here and there...

But like I said... What do you mean exactly by "ancient?" Im certain that in the middle ages they had some sort of device by then? But you never know... I think people were nasty back then almost all around.

Even animals know better and intentionally walk on cement to sharpen their claws... and they lick their butt's clean. Go figure!

It depends on how ancient you're getting. They could have been filed down. Or broken off, or chewed....It depends on the era. Or, they just...weren't. If they broke, they broke, if they were long....yeah.
