We just inherited 3 aquariums from a friend of my wifes. They are in good shape but it looks to me like they were just emptied and stored, so naturally the bottoms are nasty, and the sides could be cleaned up as well. I know you have to use special stuff on them. Any suggestions?

You can go to most fish/aquarium supply store and buy products made specifically for cleaning your aquarium. But, if you'd like to save some cash, make a mixture of 3/4 water and 1/4 vinegar. Vinegar is an excellent sterilizer, deodorizer and sanitizer, and it's also non-toxic to your fish. Bleach works well too, but if you use too much it can contaminate your water and kill your fish when you finally put some in there. I'd just stick with the vinegar and play it safe. Good luck!

It really doesn't take anything special on them. as much as you can just use plain water, but if you need a little extra cleaning power for water stains from calcium deposits, use plain bleach. This should get it all out. Make sure you rinse it well, because the bleach if left in the tank can damage the seals. Rinse it well and be sure to use your de-chlorinator when setting up the aquarium for your fish and fauna.

Use a bucket that never had soap in it and fill with warm water and a few drops of bleach. Use kosher salt and /or baking soda to clean the bottom and the glass. Rinse out with fresh water several times. do not use any soap.Use a soft sponge so you don't scratch the glass.
