No. Whoever, or whatever country/government is suggesting it or actually working on it, wants Mindanao separated from the rest of the Philippines in much the same way foreign powers wanted and succeeded in separating East Timor from Indonesia.

Why? Could be several reasons:
1) First and foremost is the deuterium, used now as alternative fuel for cars and jet planes in Sweden, Canada, Germany and other countries, has been found and mined in Mindanao Trench or Philippine Deep. Based on scientific researches made during the time of Pres. Marcos, Philippines was found to have the largest deposit of this energy minerals, in the Mindanao Trench. With the inevitable depletion of the fossilized fuel, many superpowers are rushing to places which are potential sources of alternative fuel like the deuterium. Philippines is on top of the list for its deuterium deposit. Go figure why they worked hard to make Filipinos hate Marcos. Go figure why the Christian/Muslim differences in Mindanao is never resolved.
2) Surigao del Norte, which is in Mindanao, has Asia's largest nickel deposit. Surigao's 600 million tons of marble, if fully-developed, is claimed to make the Philippines the world's top producer of marble.
3) Mindanao ranks as number 1 producer of pineapple fruits worldwide.
4) Mindanao produces 54% of the Philippine GNP. That whoever wants to cripple the Philippine government only has to steal the goose that lays the golden egg.
5) Next to Indonesia, Philippines is the second largest coconut producer in the world, 56% of which national production comes from Mindanao.
6) Largest production of Philippine fruits are in Mindanao.

There is one important reason for me why I don't want Mindanao separated from the Philippines, I don't want to have to use a Passport traveling to Mindanao. Lol! Heck, why should I use a passport within my country?

No, I don't think so. Philippines is already small as it is. How much more if Mindanao will separate from the nation?

"Is it a good IDEA that Mindanao should be separated FROM the Philippines?"
No, I do not think it is a good idea. Why do you ask?

Who asked about the purpose? How about to pacify the people of Mindanao who want liberty and autonomy. To end the centuries of bloodshed and senseless killings? But is it a good idea? In as much as there may be a number of reason to support their autonomy, I find it hard to let them go, they've been a part of my social science class in primary school and a part of my identity as well.

(It's like declaring pluto as a pseudo planet... it's killing me!)

Only some muslims wished it but they won't succeed. We christians are the majority here. We developed this island through sacrifices and hardships. We understand our brother muslims. They want to keep their culture and traditions, their way of life as they keep their faith.
One word of caution, please do not call them moros. My muslim supervisor says it means uncivilized, and barbaric.
While there may be some of them worth this name, but how do we separate one from the other. They are all muslims.
And to all people in Luzon who do not understand Mindanao, please refrain from commenting bad about Mindanao.

For what purpose? What logic would be used as a basis of the cessation? What authority would prevail over the newly established nation? It's a ridiculous idea. Besides, not even a man and a woman can get a divorce there. How you gonna divorce a complete region from the rest of the country?

No, because Mindanaoans are directly related to other inhabitants of the Philippine Islands and that makes us one people and one nation. We may have differing faiths but its just superficial differences. We are bonded by our history, culture and as of the moment, by one government.I think those similarities are far stronger to be reckoned with than the superficial differences.
