Some of the fuel injection on the older VW's were not the electronic type that you find now days. I owned a 1985 VW Golf and it had a system not unlike that for a diesel engine (just less pressure). The injectors were opened by fuel pressure (about 85 psi at the injector). My real thought on this is leave it alone, because this system can be a pandora's box if you are not familiar with it, a lot of mechanic's have never heard of it.

That would be quite a task, changing to F.I. You'd need too many sensors for a modern system. Even the guys I knew in Calif with sand rails had carbs.

Stick with the electronic distributer tho. They are universal solid state fuel pumps and they are sold at parts store chains for about $40. Easy to install and very dependable.
