There have been some reports about sightings of such beings in the past. But as science today has no reliable source to underly this sightings, it is highly probable that they were only tales, exaggerations, good stories to brag about at the pub or they simply put those words like "mermaids" and "fairies" to describe something we know as something much more mundane than they did, such as manatees and stuff like that.
However, absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence.

..All the proof I need is in the eyes of my 2 year old anytime she sees a fairy on TV.
