The trick is adding oxi-clean to every load of laundry along with a detergent. I use Tide coldwater b/c I like to save $$ and wash everything in cold. I do think Tide is the best. But I also think adding the oxi-clean to your laundry and using any kind of detergent will work just as well. Oxi-clean got old spit up stains out of baby clothes for me that nothing else was getting out like shout or other stain remover products. It's as strong as bleach for colors. It cleans better than anything.

I saw on the news a couple of months ago, that Tide with Bleach Alternative is the best for top-loading washers, and Costco Kirkland Ultra (might be Canada only) is the best for front loading washers. Oxi-clean is actually the worst according to that report. But mainly it all depends on how you add the detergent. They recommended adding it to the water when you start the washer, and not to pour it over the clothes before you start it.
There's no difference in cleaning power between powder and liquid detergents, it's just a matter of preference

I use Ultra Tide and I always add a scoop of powdered Oxy - Clean to the wash water before I add the clothes. Liquid Ultra Downy fabric softener makes it smell great. (Fabric softener sheets just don't work as well.) You don't really need much, especially if you use the concentrated kind. Use a bleach stick to get the tough stains out of whites. Check your stained fabrics before you put them in the dryer. Treat them again with your stain stick or use a dab of Oxy - Clean. Rerinse as necessary. I wash everything in the gentle cycle except for heavily soiled clothes. Clothes last a lot longer that way. Buy some cheap plastic hangers. You can air dry most of your clothing and fluff in the drier to save money on your energy bill.

Tide with Bleach Alternative -
You can use this on all your clothes and it's going to disinfect them and get all the dirt etc out.
If you have whites use the Clorox Ultimate Care bleach when you wash. It doesn't leave your clothes smelling like bleach in the end and is overall better for them.
Also you may want to try Clorox Bleach for Colours if it's really bad. I use this all the time and it works great.
Another product is OxiClean Stain remover. It's small bottle with liquid like detergent. If you have really stained clothes add about half a cap full to your detergent and it'll help get all the untreated stains out etc.

I personally am a Tide user & have been for many years. It gets the clothes clean & they smell good too. I also use Tide (liquid) as a spot treatment & it works really well. I see they now have Tide that is perfume/dye free for people with allergies.

If you can tolerate the strong perfume smell, Tide. That's all I used until they changed the frangrance about 6 or 7 years ago. I've been using Cheer with Colorguard ever since. Also for whites, I use Oxyclean instead of bleach. I get non-stop compliments on how white my whites are.

MelaPower works great. I've found it to be better than Tide and cheaper as well. Tide is full of chemicals that can be harsh on your clothes as well as being strong scented as another user mentioned. Melapower cleans great, is all natural, and more economical for my budget. Check out the link below for more information.
