You haven't given any specifics about yourself, so it is hard to suggest things.
If you're a woman, try something like a Philip Stein (cheaper), Piaget (for lots of diamonds), or Rolex (for name brand recognition--you can get them as low as around $1500).
If you're a man, I'd suggest Patek Phillippe (for highest quality), Audemar Piguet (for a younger, but sleek look), or Omega (for a sportier look that can still be dressed up).

First of all, a watch doesn't make you elegant. A nice watch finishes any outfit just like other jewelry. So having said that, it depends on your budget as to what kind of watch you should buy, very nice watches have very expensive price tags. If you can't spend several hundred on a watch, then go with Timex, Citizens, etc. If you can spend a little more I would consider a nice Seiko, TAG, Breitling, or any other well made watch. However, if money is no concern go for a Rolex Submariner or Yacht Master.

I think the Cartier "Tank Louis Cartier" is the most beautiful and elegant watch of all the ones I own. There are many "Tank" variations. This one debuted in 1922. A new one like mine (18kt yellow gold manual-wind hour & minute only with crocodile strap) costs $12,100 in my latest catalogs. There are silver quartz one that are much cheaper. I haven't seen them lately, but in 2000, they cost $1300 men's and $1250 ladies'.

Try Tiffany Co. They have amazing things. I have a ton of stuff from them including two watches and alternate back and forth with them. I love them.
Rolex can go all the way up to a million dollars. Be careful with those.
Try Guess. They have trendy watches at affordable prices.
Fossil also offers a lot of them as well.

Go to overstock.com they have some really elegant watches that are reasonable, you can look elegant and still have money left in your pocket.
