Brighton is good for dirty weekends (where all the Londoners go!)

How about Kent? Hever Castle is nice. It depends on what sort of weekend out you mean - country rambling, historic sites, city stuff, etc. Oxford's atmospheric, of course. Portsmouth's good for the nautically inclined, Beachy Head down near Eastbourne's nice if you feel like something more bracing (at this time of year) and there are other sites around there, or how about a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon for some Shakespeare (take in Warwick Castle while you're there). Or you could head up the M1 into the Peak District for more windswept countryside.

Oxford is a great weekend

lovely old colleges everywhere, great pubs and you can go punting on the river if the weather is nice!
