I think my water pump has crapped out on my 1997 Jeep Cherokee. I have been leaking coolant for a few days now and there is a puddle under my Jeep after I turn it off and my reserve tank keeps emptying out on me. I replaced the lower radiator hose and still the same problem. It is not over heating so I am wondering if it IS a water pump problem? If it is, could I do the work myself?

The pump has a weep hole. Once the seal has been damaged by slack from bad bearings, it will begin to leak & most car owners begin to weep. If you have a general tool set,i.e. sockets ratchets & wrenches, you should be able to change it. Some vehicles require removing several componets to get to the water pump. If that is your case, Make notes of any wires removed, label them, & keep the bolts for each individual componet separate from the others. Some bolts are different sizes & lengths. Keep good notes. Be sure & clean all the old gasket material off before the new install.

Go to www.autozone.com They have on-line repair manuals for just about every car. You'll be guided through entering your vehicle make and engine size/type. Find the water pump and read the directions they give you. I changed the one on my Buick this way. It's cheaper and easier than buying the manual. If it looks to complicated, then take the car to a shop.

Remove the timming belt.? no!!
Its really an easy fix. You will have to remove you fan belts and the fan itself. Then walla! The next bolts to remove are the water pump bolts, once that is done, put in your NEW pump. Its really easy. I have fixed mine (in many diffrent cars) many times. A lot cheaper than going to a shop.

First thing is to stop driving it or you will have a bigger problem (ask me how I know this). Next go to your local parts store and get a repair manual, a rebuilt/new water pump and some gasket sealer. Then get to work. Good luck!

It varies on every car, but it shouldn't be that hard.
You can do it if you have the time, the tools, and a repair book. If you replaced the hose yourself you can probably do it. Take your time and be careful though!

I wouldnt advise you to change it. If you do , you will have to remove the timing belt .
