Succintly, it prohibits companies and other organisations misusing (e.g. selling) personal data of their customers/ clients. They have to be registered, as does their intended use and storage of such data, and there are Draconian penalties for breach. That is why only the customer is allowed to talk about their account (for example), not their friend or personal representative, like a solicitor, without written permission.
