Your manual will tell you how to check the transmission fluid level.
Typically, if its an automatic (should be if you complain about hard shifting) you have it in neutral (or drive with someone standing on the brake pedal in a couple of cases) and the engine running.
Low fluid MIGHT make it feel like its shifting hard, but its more likely a vacuum system or electronic controls issue unless the vehicle has a fluid leak and has been leaving puddles of oil where you park it.
There's enough different possibilities that if the fluid is not low... it needs to go to a professional.
If the fluid is low... there's a leak and it needs to go to a professional...
So either way you're going to end up taking it to a shop.

Like the guy said details, details, like what year is it? Is it auto or standard?
Standard, you need to get your clutch replaced.
Automatic - Check your transmission fluid and you may need another transmission modulator, who knows.
Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

Do you like your freelander? I had one when it first came to the states. It is a sharp looking truck. Hate the Hdc system. do you have your manual? it will tell what kind of fluid to put in it. If it is a trainee problem take it to a dealer, it may still be covered under warranty.
