in the real world it is 1024 MB.
in the marketing world it is 1000 MB.
so, if you buy a brand new hard drive and on the box it claims to be 100 GB, it is really 100 * 1000MB = 100000MB
BUT when you format it, the computer correctly formats it as 100000/1024 = 97.66 GB (actually less once you subtract reserved areas, etc.)
