It is my informed understanding that Conservatives are the 'Christian Party'. That they use Christianity as their moral compass in their political decisions. Whether I agree with that is immaterial...I respect that right. I am a Christian as well, and I was taught that this meant I should act in a 'Christ-like' manner. Ask myself, "What would Jesus do" in any situation before acting or speaking.

So my question is this...if you are sincerely Christian, how can SOME of the Republicans engage in such condescendion and name calling when engaging in political discussion? Is that what Jesus would do? Would He be so intollerant, and call his opposition immoral and liars at every opportunity?

I am truly not trying to be sarcastic...and would genuinely like to understand the rationalization for this kind of behaviour...

Thank you for the intelligent responses...a great way to start the week!

As a post script....I would like to add that I am fully aware of the democratic contribution to mudslinging. I was simply asking about the Republican participation as it was my impression that they held themselves to a higher moral standard and refer far more frequently to their Christian beliefs. Again...I am not meaning to offend anyone, and apologize if that was the case...

I think that your criticism is a valid one.

As Christian's, we are called to "turn the other cheek" when insulted. But being a Christian, by definition, means being human and therefore, imperfect.

If you take some time and objectively review the posts from both sides, you will have to admit that the condescension and name calling typically goes both ways.

And in our humanity, many of us Christian's often respond in very un-Christ-like ways.

First of all, I think you are making a broad generalization, when you say Republicans are the Christian party. I wouldn't agree with this statement. Many Christians can be found in the Republican party, but do not control the speech of others.

Secondly, if Jesus thought people were "liars and immoral," He would have told them so.

I am a Christian. And I try to treat others the way I want to be treated. But I also speak the truth when it comes to politics, as well as everything else.

Not all Conservatives are Christian. I am not. I don't believe in organized religion, however, I believe in Jesus Christ, and the basic values of Christianity. It was Jesus who taught morals, not the Jews, or Muslims. Most religions are based on the same ideals as Christianity, because of Jesus Christ, and his ethics.
The answer to your question is, God advocates war. Did He not promise David, a king, in the old testament, Israel, and to receive it, he must fight? Did he not war with the enemies?
Is it that you think when Christ said, "Turn the other cheek" he meant to lay down and die? If he meant that, there would be no Christians alive.
Here are about 100 links for you to study on the murders of Christians by terrorists, like Al Qaeda, and even the Chinese. Have a look at these links, and then tell me it is not okay for fight for your life, and your countrymen!

First - to the poster above me, the question had only been posted for two minutes when I began my answer. Some people think about what they're going to write before posting. I think posting your statement after four minutes is pretty short-sighted.

Second - to answer the original question: Not everyone on this board is what they claim to be. Some people post outrageous statements solely to make it look like the other side is crazy.

Not every conservative is a Christian or even religious. I have strong conservative values, but I don't prescribe to any organized religion. I simply believe that what comes around goes around. Live by the Golden Rule, and you'll do well in life.

First off,the Republican Party has many components to it. Not all are Christian are even religious for that matter. Some are ex-Dems. The Conservatives who are more religious may have a stronger ,collective voice. Then again, that is also true for the far left wing of the dem party. They have grown stronger in their own party.

As for Y/A ,that does not represent a whole group of people. I've seen name calling and hypocrisy from some liberals as well. Where is their tolerance?

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the Republicans are the "Christian Party" or even that there is such an entity. I would say that conservative principles align better with Christian principles than do liberal principles. Further, I would say that Republicans are more conservative than Democrats as a whole.

As for name calling, if you're referring to vulgarities, there's no place for it. If you're referring to descriptive adjectives (e.g fool, ignorant, liar, hypocrite, etc.) even Jesus said those things when appropriate.

Count the number of childlike insults from liberals, and then count them from conservatives on this site.

Now come back here, and ask that question again.

At least when I insinuate that someone is an idiot, I usually explain why. You rarely hear, "you are stupid, because bush is bad" type insults from a conservative. Those are more "feeling based" insults, rather than fact based ones.

That being said, just because someone has christian values, does not mean they are a bible thumping, righteous extremist. What would Jesus do? I don't know, but if he were to give a terrorist a hug, they wouldln't hessitate to blow him up.

As a person, not just a conservative do not approve of any of the name calling in political debates. However I know that everyone has a right to say what they feel democrat or republican and if they insist on being inflammatory, I'm just going to ignore them.
Deprive name callers of attention and they will stop, because they most likely do it for attention.

Im conservative and im a Jew. Im very conservative when it comes to Israel and think that the greatest threat to Israel besides terrorists is the political left. Liberals views on national security are a joke and i hate their reactive instead of proactive approach in fighting terrorism. God Bless President George W. Bush for all hes doing to fight terrorism and protect the United States as well as Israel.

I am conservative, Republican, and never attend church.

I see the mud slinging going on from both sides, but I do not think it has anything at all to do with politics or religion. (BTW, Jesus DID do some mudslinging, read your Bible)

Peoples use of language and their methods of expressing themselves is more associated with their education level and social class.
