If you have a child you may also have a partner or spouse...and regardless of whether you do or don't I'm going to assume you're not looking for "abstinence works best" as an answer. So:

An IUD (intrauterine device) is the most effective contraception after abstinence and sterilization. An IUD must be inserted and removed by a doctor, so it's not something that's easy to change your mind about (as compared to, say, a barrier method), and can stay in place for as long as 10 years. But it does offer the most protection from unwanted pregnancy. There are several possible side effects and risk factors with an IUD, and it should not be used if, for example, you have unexplained vaginal bleeding. Common side effects include mood changes, headaches, acne, cramping, increased bleeding during your period, and nausah. (For more on the IUD, see http://www.americanpregnancy.org/preventingpregnancy/iud.html) Also, you can get pregnant shortly after having the IUD removed. (Note that there are essentially two kinds of IUDs: those that contain copper, and those that contain synthetic hormones. Again, if you can't take the pill for some reason, chances are you would be advised against using the types of IUDs that are hormonally driven, such as "Mirena.")

Next would be the various hormonal methods, but you can't take the pill it's a fair bet that other hormonal contraception is out of the question as well, due to the common risk factors, side effects, etc.

The barrier methods, such as a diaphragm, are not as effective, but when properly and *consistently* used, and used *with spermicide* they have a very good success rate. That said, the statistics on diaphragm effectiveness vary widely, with some studies finding an effectiveness rate of 98 percent (when used conscientiousy and with the right amount of spermicide), and other studies suggest numbers much lower. The "downside" is you have to insert it every time you have sex -- which does increase the risk of pregnancy from "human error" (it won't protect you if you leave it in your bathroom medicine cabinet!); on the plus side, there are virtually no side effects (unless you have some kind of allergic reaction to the rubber...but there are both latex and nonlatex ones on the market), it's effective immediately, and you can also stop taking it immediately without any medical intervention.

Hope that helps.

The depo is very good if you dont plan on having kids within a year! it does cause you to bleed for about 3 weeks and then stops all together(great part about it), some ppl have a problem with it (gaining weight) but not everyone..(i didnt)..then i heard the nuva ring is good and easy to use to!...

Ps, I DO NOT suggest the IUD!!! i thought it was good sounding when i first attempted to have it done but no way, its not worth it, it feels like your insides are being rippped out! i know by experience,(they poked a hole in my uterus, which happends often and they didnt get to do it afterwards bcause of it) and the cramps afterwards are horrible and i can handle pain very well! but even tho it sounds good, i wouldnt suggest that to noone!

I think it depends on the woman but my doc prescribed me the nuva ring because i have trouble on the shot like extremely sore breasts and a constant period and she did not want to put be on the pill because the sronger dose would do the same thing and if you forget the lower dose within a few hours you could get pregnant- good luck

I think the shot is the best right now. It is every three month with a shot in the belly and best of all, no period.

Male and/or Female condoms. If you can't use oral contraceptives, there is either abstinence or condoms. Sponges, spermicides...
