You might think your saving money by subbing out, but if you don't give all the work to one guy it will end up a nightmare! No one will take responsibility if there is a problem, because they will blame the other guys work. Things have to be coordinated on a time schedule or you end up losing materials.
It is a tight group that talk among themselves, so you can get a reputation of disloyalty and no one will want to help you out.
Best thing is to choose someone who has been in business for a long time and has a store to visit, not just the back of his truck.
It's after the pool is in that you need to worry about.
Enjoy!

You really have to be careful. I live in Santa Cruz and I happened to know a great guy. Many pool places refer high-priced or incompetent people. The best thing is to find someone locally who can provide references and local jobs that you can perhaps visit and inspect in person. Take your time. There is always plenty to do if you want to help with labor, material purchases, landscaping, etc, but i would leave the pool and plumbing/electrical to a pro. I am very handy and it was way above my head, as there are so so many tricks in the pool industry, not to mention specialized equipment for boring, jigs, etc.

I paid 25K to have my pool remodeled and I did a lot of the labor and all the trenching/landscaping. Pools are not cheap. Unfortunately it is one area in the home where most people cannot save much by serving as contractor or completing some of the work as it is simply too specialized.

Best of luck-and in summary-find a local guy that you like and who has done work that is similar in taste and quality to what u want.

If you have never done construction work before or don't have a lot of time, hire someone. Ask for references, then ACTUALLY call them. Ask if you can see the contractors work. The true test of a contractor: Ask him where is hardware account is at, then go to that store and ask about him.

You can find one. Try asking neighbors etc who they've used and see who they've been most satisfied with.

Also check consumer reports etc.
