When is the right time to revive my Horsfield tortoise from Hibernation, it is now 12th March 2007, I live in London and the temperature has risen to 16-18 degrees. He has wintered in a fridge. what about cold snaps?

If you keep it in a garden..I guess you have made a run for it. If you manage to put a polythene sheet over the run to keep the cold air out. It may be encouraged to come out now with some good sunshine. And you might have to sprinkle straw on the ground to keep frost covered.

Are you keeping him outside? Then wait a bit. If you can bring him inside during the cold snaps (or even into a garage) it would help out. If he is in the house and you keep it above 60s or so, anytime would be ok. They will wake up slowly with increasing daylight and temps. Make sure you "thaw" him out slowly to give him time to adjust.

Hi! If its still that cold I wouldn't take him out yet but I guess it depends on how long you've had him in hibernation too. You should be checking him periodically to see if he is moving, loosing weight and so forth but honestly that is all I know about hibernating them, I never hibernated mine before. If you plan on keeping him inside after you thaw him then I'm sure you would be fine to go ahead and get him out.
