Hi Bookworm!
You should try author C.J. Cherryh.
I would recommend her books
"Arafel's Saga",
"Faery in Shadow" and
"The Morgaine Saga".
These are true adult Celtic Fantasy.
She also does some other great sci fi such as:
"Downbelow Station" and
"Chanur's Saga"
Of course, J.R.R. Tolkien is the classic master of this genre...
Send me an E-mail if you like these and/or would like more author recommendations...I adore hearing from other bookworms!

The Mists of Avalon series is great, and it has fairies in a way. It is the retelling of the Arthur legend from the point of view of the women involved. Morgan Le Faye (of the fairies) is one of the main characters--she is not presented as an evil person, like some of the Arthur stories treat her. In this, her aunt, Morgause, is the evil one. Morgan is a priestess of Avalon, the island where the Mother Goddess is worshipped, and at one point she does wander into the land of fairies (hence her name). Her "pairing" with Arthur is a ritual pairing of the king and the mother goddess, and neither knows who the other is until too late.

I like the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
If your looking for fairies try the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Cofler

Tinker and Wolf Who Rules by Wen Spencer are books that involve fairies whose world is now interconnected with our present day world through a dimensional gate in Pittsburgh. When the story starts out Tinker is a 19 year old woman running her own junkyard. One of the fairy viceroys is chased into her scrapyard by a pack of wargs (very beastly creatures) and she tries to help save him. I loved these two books.
