A Beautiful mind is a somewhat fictionalized account of the life of John Nash, a Carnegie Prize winner for mathematics. His brilliance, however, can do nothing to stop his desent into schizophrenia. He has several treatments, including insulin shock therapy and antipsychotic medications, but they produce terrible sides effects, namely hallucinations of "people". He and his wife (played by Jennifer Connelly, who won a best-supporting actress Oscar for this role) decide to endure the schizophrenia rather than the effects of the meds (at one point in the film, Nash is bathing their infant son and leaves him in the tub alone. He tells his wife that "Charley" (his hallucinatory friend) is watching the baby. She barely manages to save the child before he drowns). He struggles to cope with his condition, still experiences hallucinations from time to time, tries newer meds, and manages to restablish himself as a professor. The film ends with Nash and his wife leaving an auditorium in Stockholm, when Nash sees his three hallucinatory "friends" smiling at him. When his wife asks what's wrong, he smiles and says "Nothing". We're left to ponder whether that means that he's come to terms and made peace with his demons, or if this is indication that he'll have more episodes to come. A powerful film, but much of it is based on screenwriter Akiva Goldsman's knowledge growing up as the son of a child psychologist who had emtionally disturbed children living with them. Several parts of this story are fictionalized, so if you need to review and summarize the film, that's one thing. But for John Nash's actual story, I'd advise reading the book as well.

A tidbit: Sometimes I read Technology Review, which is the MIT Alumni/Alumnae magazine. A few years ago (2004?), I was flipping through an issue, galancing at notes sent by graduates. Sometimes it's by year, others by Course (your major). Under Physics, there was a brief mention of Alicia, about 50 years after she graduated.

A Beautiful Mind:
The true story of prominent mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. is the subject of this biographical drama from director Ron Howard. Russell Crowe stars as the brilliant but arrogant and conceited professor Nash. The prof seems guaranteed a rosy future in the early '50s after he marries beautiful student Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) and makes a remarkable advancement in the foundations of "game theory," which carries him to the brink of international acclaim. Soon after, John is visited by Agent William Parcher (Ed Harris), from the CIA, who wants to recruit him for code-breaking activities. But evidence suggests that Nash's perceptions of reality are cloudy at best; he is struggling to maintain his tenuous hold on sanity, and Alicia suspects a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Battling decades of illness with the loyal Alicia by his side, Nash is ultimately able to gain some control over his mental state, and eventually goes on to triumphantly win the Nobel Prize. Based loosely on the book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar, A Beautiful Mind (2001) co-stars Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp, Christopher Plummer, and Judd Hirsch.
