Nazi is actually short for the National Socialist Party in Germany during the 1930's and early 1940's, until the end of World War II. Socialism, in general, tends to be liberal in it's politics. Our current Democratic party contains more of the Socialistic policies. I'm not sure why this term holds the ultra conservative connotations, which it does, in our vocabulary.
