The long term pros to Hong Kong was the building up of an economic infrastructure that established it as a major centre for trade and commerce. The main benefits to Britain were political and strategic. It gave them a naval base in the Far east which gave them influence and a means of deterring any other colonial power from seeking to compete with them for territory.
