Given that you own a specific car, the best things to do are to make sure you change oil every three months, drive gently - try to limit the amount of time you spend above 2000 rpm on your tach.
If you want to get a new car, the best bet right now is probably a Toyota Hybrid - the Camry got 35mpg over an extended Motor Trend driving test.

The engine can be improved but then laws and BS come into play and set it back.

nothing big..economy has been getting better year by year..Fuel injection higher compression, because of better electronics..better exaust sustems...more transmission speeds..locj up overdrive..
