My boss is looking for an alternative in web-hosting to Bellsouth. We are currently paying over $1000 / MO. (although this DOES include listing on their sites). I hate disappointing you but 99% of all e commerce websites fail. However please read this I did not said this to earn the 2 points:-) There is only 1 option so you can succeed and I'll have to repeat this one more time so you can sink this in, THERE IS ONLY 1 option to succeed with e commerce these days.....

I think you should be careful when choosing a web host. If you are looking to host critical information and you can not afford to be down, then do not let the price dictate your choice of web host. The price will always depend on your hosting needs. For example if you need lots of traffic you need to consider a http://www.hostwire.com/hosting/dedicated-hosting.php dedicated server with un-metered bandwidth. There is too many factors that affect the price of your hosting, I would say start by writing down your expectations and then start researching the hosting companies. Best way to start would be by asking friends and business partners where they host and what their experience is.
I would say that now a days you can get a decent dedicated server from $149 to $299

You are way over paying for hosting, if you switch you can use that money you will be saving to launch some major advertising.
There are many ways to advertise both online and offline, Radio,TV, Small newspaper ads, such as shopper or penny savors. Google, Yahoo PPC, the list goes on.
I have found that companies claiming to Host and advertise don't often deliver on both. I would use seperate companies for your hosting and advertising.
Switch your hosts to get your costs down and then research effective advertising.

That's pretty expensive just for hosting and listing your site on their sites. You can get cheaper hosting without sacrificing the uptime though. Pretty much all of the hosting sites have uptimes in the upper 90th percentile unless it's free ad supported hosting or they are hosting with a server from their basement. As far as driving traffic to your site you should probably talk to a professional web development/marketing firm as they can probably come up with things specific to your company such as working with vendors and suppliers in your industry to link to your site.

I have found that the best way to host a proffesional looking site would be through Webstarts. They offer great support, and they have a unique drag and drop tool that allows you to do almost anything with your site with the click of a button. And with Webstarts you can have little to no knowledge of how to build a website and it will still turn out proffesional looking, also on the site it helps you get traffic through Google, Yahoo, Msn, etc....
