Was it the orcs?

That would be the Nazgul (Sauron's "most terrible servants.")

They are also called:
"the Fell Riders", "the Nine Riders", "the Black Wings" when appropriate, and "the Shadows", "the Nine", 'Ringwriath", "the Nine Servants of the Lord of the Rings", and, by the Orcs of the Tower of Cirith Ungol, "the Shriekers".

Only a few of the Nazgûl are named or identified individually in Tolkien's works. Their leader was the Witch-king of Angmar, and his second in command was named Khamûl, 'The Black Easterling' or 'The Shadow of the East'.

In the Middle-earth Collectible Card Game produced by Iron Crown Enterprises, the Nazgûl had the following names:

Dwar of Waw
Akhôrahil
Khamûl the Easterling
Indûr Dawndeath
Witchking of Angmar
Hoarmûrath of Dír
Ren the Unclean
Uvatha the Horseman
Adunaphel

Now enough boring you....

They were Nazgul or Ringwraiths led by the Witch king. sauron forged 9 rings for men, 7 for dwarves and 3 for elves plus the One Ring to bind them. The elves were wise enough to not use their rings and told the dwarves not to use theirs, but 9 kings of men were foolish enough to use them and gained great power, but their souls became slaves of Sauron and roamed Midgard (Middle Earth) long after death as wraiths. lady Eowyn killed the Witch King with a magic sword when he was about to kill her father king Theoden of Rowan who lay under his horse.

They are called The Nazgûl, or Ring-wraiths.

They are sometimes called The Nine or The Black Riders.

They are the nine human kings who were corrupted by their lust for power.
