the best time to change a cam belt is when upon inspection it starts to look suspect.whats to say that if you have not owned the car from new that the belt wasnt changed at say 80000km.manufacturers reccomendations are only guidelines-if 60000km is the recomended time to change the belt but you find that at 40000km the belt is breaking then you would change because it is not going to last to 60000km

You have a 1.5Liter Dual Overhead Cam Engine (DOHC) that is an interference engine. Gates Belts shows a replacement interval of 60,000 miles outside of the state of California, but I'm not sure of the UK specifications. Your valves can be damaged if the belt breaks, so I would change it at 60,000 miles (about 100,000 km). See the Gates link below.

i just had my car MOTd on Saturday and the garage told me that timing belts are normally replaced at between 80000 and 85000 miles
