Zodiac, directed by Fight Club's David Fincher, and featuring such outstanding actors as Jake Gyllenhaal (a.k.a. Kobe McShire, for his uncanny resemblance to Tobey Maguire), Mark Ruffalo, and the great Robert Downey, Jr., is the true-to-life story of a serial killer.
The Zodiac Killer ran amok in the Bay Area for over a decade, murdering unsuspecting loners and eluding capture, all the while teasing his pursuers with encrypted notes, blood-stained fabrics from the victims' own clothing, and more. To this day, many argue over The Zodiac's true identity, pushing him to the forefront of countless cold-case investigations, and further intriguing criminologists, worldwide.
Decades after the fact, the killer himself (probably) dead, does this story still have the power to strike terror in the hearts of moviegoers? It just might.
Having seen this almost-three-hour epic, I can honestly say that it held my attention. The characters were interesting - big thanks to the very talented actors who portrayed them. The direction was good, though it was missing something - but I'll come back to that. All-in-all, Zodiac is a solid murder mystery. ...But where's the terror?
I don't know about you, but when I go to see a movie about a serial killer, I bring a few expectations with me, and a jump or two is definitely one of 'em. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a good story more than a good scare, but with a true, naturally terrifying story as gripping as this, is it unreasonable to ask for both?
All things considered, I'd recommend this film, but only to a certain group of people. If you're a big mystery buff - the type of person who enjoys documentaries and has a lot of patience, see Zodiac. It really is a fantastic movie, and I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. If you're looking for a quick, exciting thrillride, see... just about anything else. I give Zodiac an above-average B.
