I think subconsciously (especially if you're a woman) we are programmed to think being assertive is a bad thing. We are conditioned to please others.

Being assertive means valuing yourself and your needs first. Start slowly. If something isn't working in a relationship (work, personal etc) then speak up. You can say something tactfully. Once you do it, it will become easier for you. It takes practice. Take it in small steps.

Borrow some library books on assertiveness, self esteem and confidence.

When engaging in a conversation speak clear and loud enough to get your point across. Do no ignore something bothering you, rather confront the issue head on.
