After clicking ctrl+alt+delete button and locked the PC, what happens in the background of the PC?

nobody can sit in front of the PC and do any work without unlocking it. On the other hand, the PC can do any scheduled work which does not require any interference from a user like hard disk scanning, virus scanning and etc.
