(Please take note of your BIOS Settings first, maybe it's where the problem is)

I guess you need to reinstall Windows with a new Installer CD. That doesn't mean the CD should be genuine since you told you are keeping your product key.
I mean reformat the hard disk again and install Windows again.

If ever it really would not work, forget Windows for a while and install Linux on your crappy PC while filling your piggy bank and still doing your usual functionality. Wait until your piggy bank can buy you a brand new hard disk. Then decide if want to still get back on creepy Windows or not.

Sounds like it is loading a driver for some piece of hardware that has a conflict. This happens when you can boot up in safe mode. I would boot up in safe mode and remove any sound card or video devices from device manager to start. Then if it comes up okay in regular mode, find the correct driver for that hardware.
Good luck!

If you got a driver disk with your computer then this is the time to use it. Install all the drivers on there and that will probably sort your problem for you

You will be able to use someone else's CD to reinstall windows to your machine using your own key. Beware of downloaded disks as they may be hacks.
