Hello

I am looking for some good information about SIDS prevention.
Some of the websites I looked at provide good information, but is missing fundamental facts, such when you should keep a babies room cool, it doesn't mention it not getting too cold.

Any good sites that would cover everything?

Well I can give you what I've learned through my research since the death of my 5 month old to SIDS in 2003. First off SIDS cannot be prevented. Nobody almost dies of SIDS so if a baby stops breathing and can be revived it was not SIDS it was apnea (not the same thing). SIDS is not heredity and despite what a lot of people say it does not affect one race or nationality more than another. SIDS can happen from birth up until 12 months of age with the peak (89%) being2 to 4 months of age. Positioning has nothing to do with why a baby suddenly stops breathing. Suffocation is not SIDS so a baby that dies on its tummy because it was face down in the crib or because of a blanket is not SIDS it is suffocation, not the same thing. They have changed the way they rule a SIDS death and suffocation is suffocation it is no longer considered SIDS. My daughter was on her back and still died of SIDS. I joined a SIDS group shortly after she died and guess what....most of the mothers in my group have also stated that their babies were on their backs, sides, in strollers, swings, etc. There were only a couple on their tummy. If a baby dies on its tummy and it was not suffocation then yeah it was probably SIDS but that baby would have died in any position just like my daughter did. A sudden cesation of breathing has nothing to do with positioning or there would be no babies at all dying other than in just one position. People are so hell bent on this back to sleep stuff that they follow it so cautiously along with everything else they have come up with and then like me their baby dies and they are left saying but I did everything I was supposed to. It doesn't matter what you do. Whatever is causing these babies to stop breathing is beyond our control as parents. It is something you have no control over and if it's going to happen it's going to happen. I've had two more and both of them slept in whatever position they wanted, usually on their stomach, and they are both fine. SIDS has been known to happen up until 1 year but the risk decreases after six months. I know three people in my SIDS group that lost their babies at 10 month and two at 12 months. There are also 2 that lost their baby to SIDS while their baby was awake so it doesn't even have to happen while they are sleeping. As far as it running in families this is false. SIDS IS NOT HERDITARY. I asked every doctor that was involved in my daughter's care at the hospital because I was terrified of having anymore children. They all said that it is not herditary and is not likely to happen twice in the same family.

Pacifiers do not prevent SIDS despite what I've seen other say, I know it doesn't because my daughter had one in her mouth when she died. It fell out when she stopped breathing.

For more good info go the sidsfamilies website and read some stories from people that have actually experienced it.

SORRY I MUST DISAGREE with you. I've done my research, not internet research either, I've talked to doctor's, specialists, etc. SIDS IS NOT HEREDITARY and what you are talking about is just another theory that has been disproven. My daughter was only asleep for like 15 to 20 minutes before we noticed she was not breathing not 4 hours. There is no such thing as a SIDS related death and all babies that die of SIDS are dead as soon as they stop breathing because their body begins to shut down and they can not be revived no matter what. There is no such thing as a baby almost dying of SIDS. You need some updated information.

I must somewhat disagree with the previous response. They are now finding that many of the SIDS cases in the past were due to undiagnosed fatty oxidation disorders. These disorders produce toxins that cause the major organs to shut down during a fasting state (or when a baby is put to bed for longer than 4 hours). These metabolic disorders are in fact inherited. You can find more information about fatty oxidation disorders at www.fodsupport.org.

This isn't meant to frighten you, nor is it to say that "all" SIDS cases are caused by the same thing. The good news is that many hospitals now participate in newborn screening tests which will actually test for these metabolic disorders.

I agree that you should probably visit the SIDS website for more information - they would have the best advice for you.

I can't imagine no better site then http://www.sids.org/

If you can't find what you are looking for there then perhaps you are looking for "great answers" that are simply not there.

Try sticking with the facts and not made up remidies. Good luck on your search.
